Louise Carson Smith Mountz, 100 of Garrett, died on June 26, 2012 at Provena Sacred Heart Home in Avilla. Mrs. Mounts was born October 20, 1911 in Fond Du Lac, WI to Roy Carson and Charlotte (Scheure) Smith. She attended Western College for Women in Oxford, OH and graduated from The Ohio State University with a degree in merchandising, where she was a member of the Delta Delta Delta Sorority. She also attended Manchester College and Indiana University. She received her Masters degree in Library Science from Ball State University in 1962. She was a teacher at Monroeville High School and Riverdale High School in St. Joe. She was a librarian at Avilla High School, Penn High School in Mishawaka, Northwood Junior High in Fort Wayne, McIntosh Junior High School in Auburn and director of Media Center at DeKalb Junior High School. She married George Edward Mountz on May 4, 1935 in Dayton, OH and he died in 1951.

Mrs. Mountz’s community involvement was extensive. She was on the board of directors of the DeKalb County Chapter ARC, DeKalb County Heart Association, DeKalb County Community Concert Association, American Field Service, Ft. Wayne Philharmonic Orchestra Association, Ft. Wayne Art Museum, DeKalb County Historical Society, Garrett Historical Society, DeKalb County Genealogy Society, Acres Landtrust, Preservation of DeKalb County Heritage Association, DeKalb Memorial Hospital Women’s Guild, a life member of Indiana School Librarians Association, International Association School Librarianship, Indiana Association Educational Communication and Technology, Association Trust Media Educators, Indiana Retired Teachers Association, National Trust Historical Preservation, Historical Landmarks Foundation, Delta Kappa Gamma, past province officer and president of Tri Kappa, Greenhurst Country Club, Ft. Wayne’s Women Club, Athena Literature Club, Ladies Literature Club of Auburn and Garrett United Methodist Church.

Surviving are her children, Peter Carson Mountz of Garrett and Pamela McDonald of Dallas, TX; her grandchildren, Brent and Braden McDonald, Edward and Howard Mountz and Mary Elizabeth Wheeler; and her great grandchildren, Edward, Lola and Lydia Mountz. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Phillip A. Smith.

A Memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 30, 2012 at 1 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home in Garrett, with calling starting at noon. Tom Novy will officiate. Burial will be held at a late date in Mt. Zion Cemetery near Pleasant Lake, IN. Memorials are to Delta Delta Delta Sorority or Tri Kappa Sorority.
