Barbara L. O'Connor, a loving mother, grandmother, and sister, passed away peacefully on February 11, 2026, in Ft. Wayne, IN, at the age of 79. Born on December 5, 1946, in Chicago, IL, her journey through life left an indelible mark on all who knew her.
Barbara's career was a testament to her hardworking spirit; she drove a semi and dedicated nine years as a secretary at the Indiana State Prison in Michigan City, IN. Her commitment to her work mirrored her dedication to her family, as she balanced her professional life with raising her beloved children.
Barbara is survived by her children, Julie (Brian) McBride of Garrett, IN; Aimee (Dan) Elkin of Auburn, IN; Patrick (Michelle) O'Connor Jr. and Ryan (Kelly) O'Connor, both of Sahuarita, AZ. Her legacy continues through her cherished grandchildren: Cassidhe (Nolan) Robins, Elizabeth (Sylis) Grifka, Jordan Robbins, Paige (Allen Knick) Donat, Levi (Isabelle) O'Connor, Searra (Dylan) Secrest, Kristopher (Kayla) O'Connor, Justin O'Connor, and Rylee O'Connor, along with her numerous great-grandchildren, including Raiden, Lillian, Lynux, Aspen, Thomas, Oaklin, Karson, Johnathon, Remington, Athena, Elena, and BoAllen.
She is also survived by her sister, Beverly (Gerald) Brand from Connecticut, who shared countless memories and laughter with her over the years.
Barbara was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Floyd C. and Mary E. Burkert, her devoted husbands, Patrick F. O'Connor Sr. and Thomas McKinney, and her sister, Jacquelyn Burkert. Barbara’s heart also mourned the loss of her great grandson, Jude.
Her family will host a visitation at Thomas Funeral Home in Garrett, IN, on February 16, 2026, from 4 PM to 6 PM, allowing friends and family to gather and share their cherished memories of Barbara. Funeral services will take place at 6 p.m. Monday, February 16, 2026 at Thomas Funeral Home - Garrett, IN with Pastor Charles Mosley officiating.
Barbara was a beacon of love and strength, and she will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege to know her. Her life was a tapestry woven with the threads of family, work, and countless acts of kindness. Although she has departed from this earthly realm, her spirit will live on in the hearts of those who loved her dearly.
