Bernard R. Brennan, age 96, died on September 17, 2007, at 9 pm at Provena Sacred Heart Home in Avilla, IN. Born July 27, 1911 in Garrett, IN he was the son of Peter and Agnes (Lauby) Brennan. Mr. Brennan resided in Garrett all of his life. In April, 1962, he married Lucy Wise Cozier and she survives. Mr. Brennan was the owner of Insurance Trustees, Inc., from 1951 to 2002. He began his insurance career in 1937 as an associate of L. Dale Green, then owner of Insurance Trustees. His career was interrupted by four years of service in the Army from 1942 to 1946 during World War II. He saw service with the 70th Infantry Division and took part in two campaigns, spending two years in Germany and France. He was awarded the Combat Medal badge, Bronze Star medal, American Theater ribbon, European Theater ribbon and the Victory ribbon as well as achieving the rank of Captain. Mr. Brennan is a graduate of St. Joseph Catholic School and the Garrett High School Class of 1929. He received his B.S. Degree in economics from DePauw University in Greencastle, IN. He was a Rector Honor Scholar and was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. He received his CPCU (Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter)designation in 1958. Mr. Brennan was a member of the Garrett VFW, American Legion, Elks, Eagles, Knights of Columbus, Garrett Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club and was past President of the DeKalb County Welfare Board. He also served on the Morrill Foundation and served as Third Regional District Director of the IIAI (Independent Insurance Agents of Indiana). He also held the post of Commander for the VFW. Mr. Brennan was a philanthropist, having made major donations to the Garrett Community Center, St. Joseph Catholic Church and School. He was an avid bowler and enjoyed playing golf. Mr. Brennan is survived by his wife, Lucy; one step-daughter, Jean Cozier of Chicago, IL; a sister, Jeanne Meier of Winona, MN and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by three sisters: Margaret Luttman, Gertrude Dalton and Mary Higgins and one brother, John Brennan. Services will be held on Friday, September 21, 2007 at 11:00 am at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 20, 2007 from 4-6 pm with a Rosary service at 6 pm at Thomas Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Christian Union Cemetery with military graveside services conducted by the Garrett American Legion and VFW. Memorials are to St. Joseph Catholic School.
