Betty J. Smurr, age 86, died on Saturday, December 5, 2009 at 11:37 a.m. at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne. She was born February 15,1923 in Kendallville, IN to Charlie and Marie (Dellenbaugh) Roush. She married Jack W. Smurr on September 12, 1952 in Auburn. Betty was a machine operator at Electric Motors, retiring in 1989. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary. She enjoyed fishing at Golden Lake, playing Euchre and watching her grandchildren play sports. She is survived by her husband, Jack; 2 sons, Dirk (Susan) Smurr of Auburn and Jack R.(Renee)Smurr of Garrett; 2 grandchildren, Jack R. Smurr Jr. of Garrett and Candace Lewis of Garrett; and 2 great-grandchildren, Ty Smurr of Garrett and Blake Lewis of Garrett. Betty was preceded in death by her parents, 1 brother, Robert Roush and 2 sisters, Bonnie Jamison and Sharon Rowe. Visitation will be on Tuesday, December 8, 2009 from 6-8 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, December 9, 2009 at 11 a.m. at the funeral whom with Rev. David Mix. Burial will follow in Christian Union Cemetery in rural Garrett. Memorials are to the Red Cross or the DeKalb Humane Shelter.
