Obituary

Betty J. Zern, age 85 of Garrett, IN died at 3:05 a.m. Friday, July 24, 2009 at Miller's Merry Manor in Garrett. She was born December 17, 1923 in Garrett to Don and Martha (Schlueter) Zern and they preceded her in death. Betty was a secretary at Wiley Export Corporation from 1943-1960 and then at Warner Gear in Auburn, IN from 1960-1982 when she retired. She then worked as the secretary at the Garrett Chamber of Commerce for 20 years. She was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Garrett, Alpha Rho Chapter of Psi Iota Xi Sorority, Garrett Chamber of Commerce and a Girl Scout leader for 60 years, serving on the council board. Betty was the Garrett Citizen of the Year in 1975. She is survived by several cousins includeing: Wanda and John Blackerby and family of Clio, MI and Marcella Zern Clabaugh and family of Garrett. She is also survived by her extended church family at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church and all the "girls" whose lives she touched as a Girl Scout Leader. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, July 27, 2009 at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Garrett, with Rev. Chad Trouten officiating. Burial will follow in Cedar Creek Cemetery. Visitation will take place from 12:30 - 2 p.m. at the church. Memorials are to Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Garrett or the Limberlost Council of the Girl Scouts of America.
