Billy D. Baker, age 89, of Garrett, peacefully passed from this life on Sunday, October 5, 2014. He was born in Moultrie County, IL on June 15, 1925 to the late John and Elizabeth (Abbott) Baker. He served in the US Navy in WWII from September 2, 1943 to October 1, 1946. After the war he was an industrial insulator for 42 years before retiring in 1987. Whenever he wasn't working, Bill and his family enjoyed wonderful times of leisure and fun together. Much loved by his family and church, his big heart was filled with laughter, mischief and kindness, shared with everyone he met. He loved helping others, smiling and befriending people equally without regard to their situation or station in life. He was also enthusiastically devoted to his church family and to God. He was a happy man who felt blessed. Knowing him has been a blessing for us. Bill's health had been declining for several years. He faced this continual struggle with grace and humility. He was not one to complain. He has now traded his heart of gold for wings of gold. He was loved by all of us and will be greatly missed, yet we celebrate in his new life with our Lord. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Fannie Selock Baker; five children, Rebecca S. Baker Kiles, Angelia C. Baker Kochert, Kay Chambers, John Andrew (Andy) Baker and Joel Scott Baker; 11 grandchildren; 31 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. He was also preceded in death by 7 siblings. Visitation will be held on Saturday, October 11, 2014 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with the funeral to follow at 1 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home, 1277 C.R. 56, Garrett, IN.
