Obituary

Delmer O. Smith age 86 of Garrett, IN died at 3:15 a.m. Tuesday, August 21, 2007 at Miller's Merry Manor Nursing Home in Garrett, IN. He was a lifetime Garrett resident. He was born on November 28, 1920 in Garrett to Carl A. and Dora E. (Barrone) Smith. He married Betty U. Miller on June 16, 1940 in Garrett. He was an engineer on the B & O Railroad for 44 years before retiring in 1985. He was a WWII veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy with the Seabees, where he was a Water Tender Second Class. He received the Presidential Unit Citation while attached to the 1st Division Marines of Okinawa. He also received special training in deep sea diving. He was a member of the Garrett Presbyterian Church and the Garrett American Legion. He also volunteered at the Garrett Recycling Center, Meals on Wheels and Community Cares. Visitation will be held on Friday, August 24, 2007 from 4-8 pm at Thomas Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 25, 2007 at 10:00 am with calling 1 hour prior at Lakewood Park Baptist Church in Auburn, IN. Pastors Wayne Smith and Russell Howard will officate. Burial will follw in Christian Union Cemetery, Garrett, IN with military graveside honors provided by the Garrett American Legion and VFW. Delmer was elected Citizen of the Year in 2001. Memorials are to the Multiple Sclerosis Society, Deacons Fund of Lakewood Park or Donor's Choice. Survivors include: Wife - Betty U. Smith of Garrett, IN Son - Myron G. Smith of Fort Wayne, IN Son - Timothy P. Smith of Snow Lake, IN Son - David T. Smith of Harpers Ferry, WV Daughter - Brenda C. Viers of Myrtle Beach, SC Daughter - Deborah L. Smith of Garrett, IN Daughter - Del Marie Burchardt of Scappoose, OR Sister - Cleo Talley of Garrett, IN 16 Grandchildren 18 Great Grandchildren 1 Great Great Granddaughter Preceded in death by: Parents Daughter - Ethel Ann Smith Brother - Buford "Boots" Smith Sister - Dorothy Brandmo Sister - Eunice Sherrick Sister - Phyllis Hixson 1 Grandchild
