Auburn, Indiana – Dorothea "Rusty" Pinkerton, age 80, of Auburn, Indiana, passed away peacefully at home on May 9, 2024 surrounded by her family.

She was born on October 13, 1943 in Honolulu, Hawaii, daughter of the late Roger and Emmaline LaPierre. As the daughter and a wife of a U.S. Marine Rusty lived and traveled all over the country.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother Valentine 'Val' LaPierre, sister Laura LaPierre and infant daughter Amy Lynn.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Donald; daughters, Kerri (Pinkerton) Hatton and her husband, James; Christy Pinkerton and son Donald 'Donny' Pinkerton and his fiancé Deana. eight grandchildren Amber, Destiny, Devin, Kody, Andrew, Mia, Tylor and Brynn and sixteen great-grandchildren.

Rusty met her husband Don, a United States Marine, while he was driving a bus when stationed in Honolulu. They were married in Vista, California and had four children. Don's military and subsequent career as a truck driver moved the family to several states before settling in Indiana.

Rusty had a heart of servitude and was at her best when she was caring for and supporting others. She loved to gather people over a good meal, finding a good bargain, and playing card and board games. Rusty was the absolute happiest when she was with family whether it be celebrating a birthday or watching one of the kids at a ball game. Over the years Rusty became the mother figure and support system to hundreds of friends and children who are all better because of her love. Her kind spirit left a mark on this world that will be felt for generations to come.

Visitation will take place from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, May 16, 2024 at Thomas Funeral Home, 1277 C.R. 56, Garrett, IN  46738

Services will  follow at 7 p.m. with Rev. David Mix officiating.
