Martha J. Custer November 23, 1923 - December 25, 2011 Martha J. Custer, age 88, of Garrett died at 12:45 a.m. Sunday, December 25, 2011 at her home. She was born November 23, 1923 in Garrett to Roy A. and Maggie M. (Caid) McKinley and they preceded her in death. She married Wayne C. Custer on March 3, 1945 in Ohio and he survives in Garrett. Martha worked as a painter at the Creek Chub Bait Company in her earlier years and worked as a waitress at Platner's / Shippy's Steakhouse retiring in the 1980's. She also worked at Messengers in Auburn, Gala and Royal Theaters and at the Behler Pharmacy in Garrett, as well as being a homemaker. She was a member of the Garrett Presbyterian Church. Martha is also survived by 2 daughters, Marsha (Tom) Armstrong of Auburn and Cheryl (Robert) Clelland of Havre de Grace, MD; a son, Todd (Mariko) Custer of Garrett; 2 grandsons, Scott (Valerie) Armstrong of Auburn and Marc (Krista) Armstrong of Noblesville; 2 granddaughters, Erica Likens of Baltimore, MD and Jessica Custer of Garrett; a step granddaughter, Chantal (Grant) Crabtree of Corunna; 5 great grandchildren, Landon, Lily and Elle Armstrong of Auburn and Sadie and Hudson Armstrong of Noblesville and a step great grandson, Brooks Crabtree of Corunna. Martha was also preceded in death by a daughter, Connie Jean Custer; daughter in-law, Kathy Hughes Custer; 2 brothers, Earl and George McKinley and 5 sisters, Jessie Mae Short, Mary Sithen, Betty Whirledge, Cletus Rowe and Margaret Franke. The Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, December 28, 2011 at 7 p.m., at Thomas Funeral Home, with Al Black officiating. Visitation will take place from 4-7 p.m. Burial will take place at a later date in Woodlawn Cemetery in Auburn. Memorials are to DeKalb Home Health and Hospice or Gene Stratton Porter State Memorial.
