Maurice L. McPheeters Sr., age 80, of Garrett died on Tuesday, April 27, 2010 at DeKalb Memorial Hospital. He was born September 2, 1929 in Garrett to Cornelius G. and Orpha Mae (Brown) McPheeters. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He married Shirley M. Barkey on February 24, 1968 and she preceded him in death on June 4, 2008. Maurice was a Bartender at the Railroad Inn in Garrett for 30 years. He was a member of the Garrett Presbyterian Church, Garrett Eagles and Garrett American Legion and VFW. Maurice is survived by a daughter, Teri McPheeters of Hamilton Lake; a son, Maurice L. McPheeters Jr. of Garrett; brothers; Gary McPheeters of Garrett and Danny McPheeters of Fort Wayne; granddaughters, Rachel Martin and Nicole McPheeters of Auburn; great granddaughters, Hayley and Audra Martin, Kaid McPheeters, Kilia Fugate and great grandson, Schiler Wertman. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Jesse and Jack McPheeters and sisters, Ruth Dirrim, Lucille Keyes and Mildred McPheeters. The funeral service will be held on Friday, April 30, 2010 at 1 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home, 1277 C.R. 56 Garrett, with Pastor Scott Miner officiating. Burial will follow in Christian Union Cemetery with military honors provided by the Garrett American Legion and VFW. Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home.
