Ralph F. Shumway Jr. age 87 of Garrett, IN died at 9 a.m. Thursday, April 28, 2011 at Miller's Merry Manor in Garrett. He was born August 28, 1923 in Buffalo, NY to Ralph E. Shumway Sr. and Ruby M. (Benedict) Shumway and they preceded him in death. Ralph married Evelyn M. Smith on August 23, 1947 in Garrett, IN and she survives in Garrett, IN. Ralph was the assistant manager at Seat Cover Charlie's in Fort Wayne, IN for 33 years, retiring in 1986. He worked after retirement at the Garrett Hardware for 23 years. He was a WW II and Korean War veteran, serving in the Army. Ralph was a member of the First Church of Christ - Garrett, IN; Garrett American Legion Post #178 , where he was the chaplain since 1993 and was a past commander and member of the color guard. Ralph is survived by his wife: Evelyn M. Shumway, Garrett, IN and a son: Kim (Kathy) Shumway, Garrett, IN. He is survived by 3 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Ralph was preceded in death by his parents, 5 brothers and 1 sister. Visitation will be from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday, May 2, 2011 at Thomas Funeral Home - Garrett, IN. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 3, 2011 at Thomas Funeral Home with Brother Bud Owen officiating. Burial will follow in Christian Union Cemetery - Garrett, IN with military graveside honors by the U.S. Army and the Garrett American Legion and VFW. Memorials are to the Garrett American Legion.
