Richard J. "Sam" Maggert age 79 of Garrett, IN died Monday, August 27, 2018 at his home surrounded by his loving family. Sam was born January 17, 1939 in Garrett, IN to Forrest B. and Francis R. (Reed) Maggert. Sam married Margie J. Reamsnyder on March 31, 1989 in Lake Placid, FL and she survives in Garrett. Sam was a conductor on the B & O and CSX Railroads for 34 years, retiring in 2001. He was a Vietnam veteran, serving in the United States Airforce from 1962-1966 in Misawa, Japan as a security decoder. Sam was a member of the Garrett United Methodist Church, Garrett American Legion Post #178 and the Garrett Eagles.
Sam is survived by his wife: Margie Maggert, Garrett, IN; daughter: Wendy J. Maggert-Marti (Dave Marti), Garrett, IN; son: Kip (Tammy) Maggert, Hartland, MI; step-son: Rob (Sharon) Erman, Biloxi, MS; step-daughter: Denise Kasischke, Fort Wayne, IN; step-daughter in-law: Jill Erman, Garrett, IN; grandchildren: Amber (Todd) Hartsough, Auburn, IN; Zach Hall, CA; Shelby (Kyle) McClure, Pinckney, MI; Bailee (Joe) Fulton, Fenton, MI; Luke Maggert, Hartland, MI; Justine Hunt, Biloxi, MS; Jason Kasischke, Fort Wayne, IN; Stacey Kasischke, Fort Wayne, IN; great grandchildren: Katelynne, Logan, Alli and Riley Hartsough, Auburn, IN; Konnor, Maxx, Chase and Bryce McClure, Pinckney, MI; Tyler and Emilie Fulton, Fenton, MI; Mackenzy and Emma Hunt, Biloxi, MS. Brother: Clayton Maggert, Garrett, IN; sisters: Mary Higgins, Juanita Kline, Caroline Creager and Eleanor "Dodie" Perucca all of Garrett, In and Wava Woolard, Alaska.
Sam was preceded in death by his parents: Forrest and Francis Maggert; step-son: Dennis Erman; brothers: Melvin "Jake" Maggert, Ralph Maggert, Clifford "Hoggie" Maggert, and William "Bill" Maggert.
Services will take place at 10:30 a.m. Friday, August 31, 2018 at the Garrett United Methodist Church, 110 W. Houston St. with Pastor Jan Dimick officiating.
Visitation will take place from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Friday at the church. Visitation will also take place 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday, August 30, 2018 at Thomas Funeral Home, 1277 C.R. 56, Garrett, IN 46738.
Burial will take place in Christian Union Cemetery – Garrett, IN with military honors by the United States Airforce, Garrett American Legion Post #178 and the Garrett VFW.
Memorials are to the Garrett United Methodist Church or Garrett High School Athletics.
