Wayne C. Custer age 93, died Saturday. November 26, 2016 at St. Joseph Hospital Burn Unit - Fort Wayne, IN. Wayne was born August 8, 1923 in Garrett, IN to Alexander J. and Sadie E. (Grube) Custer and they preceded him in death. He married Martha J. McKinley on March 3, 1945. Wayne was a life- long farmer and president of Custer Farms and Custer Grain which he built with his brothers in 1967 . He was a member of the Garrett Presbyterian Church and the ACD Club. Wayne owned and enjoyed his 1937 Cord and his 1927 Auburn - which he donated to the ACD Museum and is now on display there. Wayne spent 40 summers at Pretty Lake in a cottage he built with the lumber from the Will Franks School. He lived through the Depression and experienced the evolution of farming from the iron wheeled tractors through today's machines. He was a skilled craftsman, enjoying welding, plumbing and woodworking. He was a staunch Republican and loved to ballroom dance - especially the polka. He was recognized with his family when Custer Farms/Custer Grain was a Junior Achievement business of the year in 2013. Wayne is survived by 2 daughters: Marsha (Tom) Armstrong, Auburn, IN; Cheryl (Robert) Clelland, Havre de Grace, MD; a son: Todd (Mariko) Custer, Garrett, IN; a brother: Harold (Anne) Custer, Garrett, IN; a sister: Ruth Custer Ross, Timmonium, MD; 2 grandsons: Scott (Valerie) Armstrong, Auburn, IN; Marc (Krista) Armstrong, Carmel, IN; 2 granddaughters: Erica Likens, Baltimore, MD; Jessica Custer, Garrett, IN; a step granddaughter: Chantal (Grant) Crabtree, Corunna, IN; 8 great grandchildren: Landon, Lily, Elle and Tennison Armstrong, Auburn, IN; Sadie, Hudson, Isabelle and Grayson Armstrong, Carmel, IN; 2 step great grandsons: Brooks and Grady Crabtree, Corunna, IN. Wayne was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years: Martha J. Custer; Parents: Alexander J. and Sadie E. Custer; daughter: Connie Jean Custer; daughter in-law: Kathy Hughes Custer; 3 brothers: Finley, Dale and Gene Custer. Visitation will take place from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, November 29, 2016 at Thomas Funeral Home, 1277 C.R. 56, Garrett, IN Services will take place at 7 p.m. Tuesday, November 29, 2016 at Thomas Funeral Home. Burial will take place in Woodlawn Cemetery - Auburn, IN at a later date.
